There's also been talk abou ESB being closed to the public while the top of the rock is a fairly new attraction so I'd go to the ESB. If you are in NY for one night, I suggest you go on this very inexpensive one hour tour of the entire island of Manhattan (really the only part you need to visit while visiting the City of New York). I've been on it a few times (schools take students on them) the best is the Circle Line tours. You get to see old NY, Modern NY, and everything in between! Definitely the view from the Empire State Building is best.
