Hello From Toronto - Comparing Niagara Wine Country With Australia

April 24th, 2010

Two days ago I took our European visitors on a little driving tour of the Niagara Peninsula, only four hours from our base in West Massachusetts, specifically to explore some of the 50 something wineries. My brother is a chef who works in Australia, so he is used to Aussie wines and Australia travel deals.

He is very interested in exploring the authentic tastes and flavours of everywhere he visits. So far my visitors have been very impressed with the quality of the Canadian vegetables, meats, spices, and even the various types of beers that they have tried from different microbreweries.

We got going around 9:30 am to avoid the brunt of rush hour traffic and made our way west on the QEW highway on another day of perfect weather. We drove through the industrial outskirts of Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington and Hamilton, where they were particularly fascinated by the huge industrial complexes of Ontario’s steel industry. Just about 20 minutes south of Hamilton we turned off the highway onto local Highway Number 8, Ontario’s wine route, which follows the outline of the NIagara Escarpment.

Our first stop on our wine tour was Peninsula Ridge Estates, a very impressive winery built around a Victorian farmhouse with several modern buildings that have been added to faciliate a wine tasting facility and gift shop. The wine testing area is housed in a beautiful barn-like structure with lots of wood and high ceilings, and all the wines and gifts are presented in a very attractive way. My European wine conoisseurs tasted 4 varieties of white wine and admitted that they were duly impressed. They commented that some of the wines had a more distinct flavour than what they are used to back home and indicated their surprise at the quality of wines from Ontario. Of course my brother also examined the menu of the dining room and confirmed that the establishment was indeed an upscale gourmet restaurant, featuring finely crafted cuisine.

We had a beautiful day with absolutely no humidity, so we had a clear view of downtown Toronto’s skyscrapers from the Peninsula Estates winery. After a little photo tour of the premises we made our way to the next stop: Eastdell Estates, winery located high on top of the escarpment with a perfect lookout point. The restaurant, called the “Bench Bistro” offers simple, yet innovative dishes that pay homage to the area’s bountiful harvests and local producers. Reasonably priced, two can dine, with a bottle of wine, for about $80 (CDN).

Our next stop was a relatively new winery called Angel’s Gate Estates, with a beautiful main building that included a wine boutique as well as an indoor and outdoor dining area overlooking Lake Ontario. We did not taste any wines here, but definitely enjoyed the view. Again, the facilities and surroundings hosting the wine tasting were impressive.

Then we headed further south to Vineland Estates Winery situated on the slopes of the Niagara Escarpment with Lake Ontario in the distance. This winery has sometimes been referred to as “Ontario’s Most Picturesque Winery” and we certainly enjoyed the location. It is another winery that features a restaurant as well as a wine boutique, located in an 1877 historic barn. The boutique features wines, fine glassware and local preserves, and my European travellers embarked on their second tasting of the day, this time enjoying both red and white varieties. The winery offered various types of crackers and cheese, combined with grape jellies, providing a little snack to a group of hungry pilgrims on Ontario’s wine trail. We also noted that the staff in the various wineries was extremely welcoming and friendly, an impression that got reinforced throughout the day.

Our lunch stop was at Rockway Glen Golf Course and Estate Winery, a rather unusual combination offering delights for golfing and wine enthusiasts. We had a reasonably priced lunch of gourmet sandwiches on the patio, and appropriately strenghtened continued on our way along the wine route towards our next destination: Niagara Falls.

After arriving in one of the most popular destinations in Ontario, not to be missed for any traveller to Toronto, we parked our car on the main parking lot, at $18.00 a little overpriced, although it offered unlimited parking until midnight. As we approached the falls from the south, my guests were astounded at the width of the river and the quantities of water that were about to drop down the steep precipice. We stopped for a while at a spot right where the water starts to hurl down the rocks. The amount and force of the water is awe-inspiring, and the thundering sound of the falling water provides an appropriate backdrop to this natural wonder.

The waterfall produced the most amazing complete rainbow inside the gorge that I have ever seen, offering many scenic vistas of the Niagara River set against the appropriately named Rainbow Bridge which connects Ontario with New York State.Several Maid of the Mist sightseeing boats holding curious visitors dressed in blue plastic capes were floating dangerously close to the bottom of the waterfall, providing a great photo opportunity.

Naturally, after taking in all these sights we had to take in a refreshment and we rested a bit on a restaurant patio overlooking the falls. After our brief respite we drove along the scenic Niagara Parkway towards Niagara-on-the-Lake, stopping several times at various lookout points, such as the Aero Car tram crossing the gorge, and the immense power plants located on both sides of the river, generating clean hydro-electric energy.

The bucolic countryside along the Niagara River features a large number of wineries and orchards and the road is lined with fruit stands, featuring fresh Ontario produce. Finally, we parked our car next to a beautiful park, right where the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario. By this time, the Niagara River has turned from an angry and wild river with churning waters and rapids into a mild-mannered waterway, ready to merge with the waters of one of the Great Lakes.

We had a little stroll around this charming Victorian village, admiring the beautifully kept houses and gardens, and since it was getting late we headed back into the car to continue our drive back to Toronto. The last leg of our trip was a drive through St. Catharines’ beautiful little lakeside village, Port Dalhousie, which on this day featured a younger crowd than Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Filled with a multitude of impressions of this gorgeous day, we arrived back in Toronto, sharing our various impressions. My European visitors, who had never been to North America, were truly impressed with the Niagara Region and I was glad I was able to give them a little taste of Ontario’s wine country.

Beginners’ Family Ski Vacations

February 20th, 2010

If your family wants to go skiing on your next vacation, but you do not know how to ski, go ahead and plan that ski vacation anyway! You can learn how to ski, and you will have a great time doing it. You do not even need to know the first thing about skiing before you arrive at the resort. All of the knowledge you will need is there waiting for you, and you can literally be skiing down a mountain after an hour of instruction.

Learning to ski is really quite easy. Most resorts have a ski school on the premises, and lessons are reasonably priced. Group and private lessons are usually available. It is a good idea, however, to schedule an appointment before you arrive at the resort. This will ensure that you can start learning
to ski the very first hour of your vacation.

Most ski instructors start by showing you how to maneuver around with your equipment. When you are wearing ski boots, you will be inclined slightly Forward. There is a reason for this. When you are skiing down a mountain, you will be inclined forward. Walking in ski boots the first time is a bit difficult but it works just fine if you learn to walk with your knees slightly bent.

The first maneuver you will learn is called the plow, or snow plow. This is a technique that is done by literally using your skis as a snow plow. You make the back of the skis slowing move outwards, away from your body by applying pressure and this stops you. You guide yourself on skies by bending your knees and leaning in one direction or another, depending on which way you want to go. All of these techniques can be learned in one hour, even if you have never been on a pair of skis in your life.

The beauty of skiing is that after you have learned how to snow plow, and how to guide yourself on the skis, you are ready to ski! Get on the lift, head up the mountain, and give it a try. Control your speed by snow plowing and go slow at first. When you want to pick up some speed, draw your skis back in to pick up a little speed, then push them back out into the plow position to control that speed.

As a beginner, you should stick to the trails that are designed for beginners. At most resorts, these trails are marked with a green emblem. Blue trails are for intermediate skiers, and after one day of skiing the beginner trails, you may be ready for those trails. The black trails are for experts. These trails can be dangerous for people who don’t have the skill level to handle them! Avoid black trails until you have had a great deal of ski instruction and experience. You will know when you are ready!

Ski Vacations on a Budget

When you start thinking about ski vacations, you will find a lot of information about various resorts and packages. Finding terrific vacation spots is not difficult. However, finding ski vacations that fit into your budget can be a bigger challenge.

To save money, look for lesser known resorts. This does not mean that these resorts would not provide you with a fun vacation. It simply means that they are not quite as well known as other resorts, and therefore, the prices may be a great cheaper. Also look for ski vacation packages that will include your lodging, lift tickets, lessons, rentals, and possibly even some meals.

Be willing to make some sacrifices if money is a real issue. For instance, instead of eating in an expensive restaurant each night, eat cheaper fast food, or make sandwiches in your room. Borrow equipment from friends instead of renting it. Join a group for lessons instead of taking private lessons. Do not stay at a lodge, stay at a motel farther away from the slopes if necessary. There are numerous ways that you can cut down on the expense of your ski trip.

Vacationing at Niagara Falls

December 15th, 2009

Tourism travel to the Niagara Falls began in the 1820s and within 50 years it had increased ten-fold, resulting in the area’s dominant industry. Today, approximately twelve million tourists each year visit the amazing Niagara Falls in order to admire up close how nature has changed and continues to alter the incredibly rich landscape at this part of the earth’s surface.

With famous movies like “Niagara” and “Superman II,” which were partly filmed at Niagara Falls, the extraordinary imagery of the area traveled all around the world, attracting people’s attention and making them select the Niagara Falls region as their next travel destination. Since the Rainbow Bridge, the Whirlpool Bridge, and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge were constructed, more and more tourists have been reserving a room at a nearby hotel, making the most out of the fact that human intervention actually gave them the opportunity to admire the Falls closer than ever before. In addition, according to testimonials the sound of the water falling at the bottom of the Niagara Basins is practically heard everywhere.

Travel planners suggest that the best months one should do this kind of trip are June, July and August. This is especially due to the fact that during the summer-and especially during daytime-the waterfalls are in their best “shape.” Winter sightseeing, on the other hand, has created more than a few debates. After February 4th, 1912, when three tourists lost their lives, United States and Canada decided to ban people from actually walking out on the ice bridge, which is created as the water of the river freezes, to view the Falls from below. Hard to imagine, but this was actually a usual practice of people back then! Nevertheless, if one can resist the temptation of walking over ice and can endure the cold weather conditions, visiting Niagara Falls during the winter is an amazing experience.

During the peak of the tourist season, from the Canadian side, floodlights illuminate both sides of the Niagara Falls for several hours after dark, while from the US side, the American Falls are viewed from walkways along Prospect Park, where an observation tower further enhances peoples’ view. For those still interested to take a closer look, they can go down the 300 steps to the “Cave of the Winds,” which is beneath the Bridal Veil Falls area. The Niagara Scenic Trolley offers guided trips along the American Falls, and on the other side, the Queen Victoria Park has platforms and gardens for the tourists interested to view both the American and Horseshoe Falls. Moreover, Skylon Tower’s observation deck offers the highest view of the Falls from the US side, while the Minolta Tower from the Canadian side of the area also overlooks the Falls and is open to visitors. Finally, the Niagara River Recreational Trail runs 35 miles (56 km), allowing people to stop and review some historical sites from the 1812 War, while cruise ships and the “Journey behind the Falls” offer even more excitement.

6 Useful Tips On Renting A Car Abroad

October 17th, 2009

When you next go on vacation the best way to explore a new country is by car. Renting a car allows you to sightsee at your own pace to tourist spots of your own choice. You can easily rent cars from car rental services, but there are certain things you should keep in mind when you are renting a car abroad.

  • It is a good idea to make all arrangements from the USA itself before you embark on your vacation. If you rent directly in a foreign land the language and cultural barriers, the foreign currency conversion rates, unfamiliar rental rules and other differences may utterly confuse you. Instead if you rent right from your home country, you are more likely to catch the hidden costs such as late penalties, gas charges and others.
  • Make sure your billing starts right from the time of the drop-off. Remember, there are agencies that charge on a full 24-hour basis, even if you use the car for lesser hours per day. Avoid these types of car rental agencies.
  • There are various types of discounts that are available on car rentals internationally. For example, the frequent flyer discount, credit card discount, AAA discount or senior citizen discount etc. are the most common type of car rental discounts. Insist on getting the discounts if you qualify for them.
  • When you are booking in advance, consider the prospective size of your luggage and the number of people traveling with you. In case the luggage and the size of your group are small you can consider a smaller car. But if you feel you are going to travel with a big group or have big or quite a few luggages, then book a roomier car.
  • You should carry an international driving permit with you. It is recognized by some 150 countries. However you must be at least 18 years old to obtain an international driving permit. In the USA, two agencies are authorized to issue the document: the American Automobile Association and the American Automobile Touring Alliance.
  • Do not expect to rent a luxurious or automatic car in other countries as you would expect to rent back home. For example, if you rent a car of European make, there is a high possibly that you have to drive a manual stick shift car. However, since you are not familiar with your way around in a foreign city it is better that you insist on renting an automatic car even though it comes at a higher price tag.

So you see, driving in the foreign land is much more than laughing about driving on the wrong side of the road! Be prepared and carry the right documents for safe and happy driving abroad.

Niagara Falls: Twenty Trivia Facts for you

September 30th, 2009

You’ve probably heard of Niagara Falls but how much do you really know about it? You will learn about twenty trivia facts about the Falls. You will discover the answers to these questions and more - How tall is it? How deep is it? How high is it? What does it comprise of? Who owns it? How much does it erode? How much water flows over it? Where is it? What’s gone over it?

Here are some interesting facts about Niagara Falls, mostly taken from Metromap Publication’s Street Map Guide to the Regional Municipality of Niagara:

1. The Falls at Niagara cannot claim to be the highest or the widest in the world, or even to have the greatest flow of water. The Iguazu Falls on the Paraguay-Brazil-Argentina borders surpass Niagara Falls on all three counts. But Niagara’s are the world’s most popular.

2. From the water level to the crest, the American Falls are 182 feet high, the Horseshoe 176 feet high.

3. Ten percent of the water flows over the American and Luna Falls, 90% over the Horseshoe Falls.

4. There are actually three Falls: American (Rainbow), Luna (Bridal Veil) and Horseshoe.

5. The U.S. owns all, or part, of all three, while most of the Horseshoe Falls belong to Canada. Niagara Falls is located 23 miles northwest of Buffalo, New York and 79 miles southeast of Toronto, Ontario.

6. Today 50% of the Niagara River never makes it to the Falls: it is diverted for power. This percentage increases to 75% at night and in the winter months.

7. The Falls have eroded an average of 3.78 feet/year since 1842. Since the beginning there has always been a large spread of water on the approach to the Falls.

8. The Niagara River is not a river it is a strait.

9. One and a half million gallons of water flow through the Niagara River every second, or one cubic mile every week.

10. The Falls have taken 12,000 years to erode the seven miles from Queenston Heights, where they began, to their present position. But the Falls separated around Goat Island only 600 years ago.

11. The Niagara River drains 255,000 square miles of mid-continental North America.

12. With power requirements and anti-erosion measures, erosion has been reduced to less than one foot a year.

13. The whirlpool is 126 feet deep at the water level. The water spins around in a counterclockwise direction.

14. The water depth of the lower rapids is 45 - 60 feet, with currents of up to 30 m.p.h.

15. The drop from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario is 330 feet depending on seasonal water levels.

16. Seven people have gone of the Horseshoe Falls in a barrel. Four lived, three died.

17. Only two living things have been seen to go over the Falls safely without special protection - a dog over the American Falls in the 1800’s and a boy over the Horseshoe Falls in 1960.

18. Five large boats and innumerable small ones have gone over the Falls, many with people in them.

19. A free swimmer has never conquered the lower rapids.

20. Before his death in 1942, the famous Red Hill saved 28 people from death over the Falls and salvaged 149 bodies of those that didn’t make it. He accumulated more lifesaving medals than anyone else in the world.

As you can see, many facts have been compiled about Niagara Falls over the years but at least you probably now know considerably more than you did before about this amazing spectacle. You can either tell others that are planning to visit the Falls what you have learned, or you can plan to see it yourself now that you are an expert on the subject!
